This morning we brought Isabel's sister to the shelter to meet a dog we met yesterday. Her shelter name is Ellie. She's bubbly, bright eyed, and loves to hug and kiss. We see much of the Isabel in her and felt she would be a young, playful companion for our other girl who loves to romp around. Ellie made it clear, as Isabel did, that we are to be her family, showering us with hugs and kisses as Isabel did all those years ago.
We got them together this morning. They got along fine. Ellie was a little rude early on, but she got shown her place and she accepted it right away. The seal of approval has been given, as it was when Isabel approved her sister.
She will be ready for adoption on Friday. Though a part of us has been torn away, and will never be fully whole, Ellie will be a wonderful addition to the family, and bring with her some of the light that was Isabel, a much needed thing for all of us here.
So, we take some comfort in knowing that as Isabel's spirit now is among us, we are saving a new life. In fact, we are saving three. Ellie was to become a foster dog. Now her foster slot will be open to another dog that can move out of the shelter, opening two kennels for new dogs that just need a chance to find their families. We know this is what Isabel wants.
I also want to say thank you to all of you for your thoughts, prayers, good wishes, emails, and phone calls. It's really meant a lot. Thank you.

It will be wonderful for all of you to have Ellie with you soon, she will help you adjust to the loss. Dogs are just wonderful that way also. Congratulations and best wishes.
Yay!!!! I'm so glad to hear that you found a dog to bring into your family. I'm sure Isabel is wagging her tail with joy because you gave another dog in need a forever home and made it possible for two more dogs to have a second chance at life.
You're an angel, kiddo.
I have a sister in law in Kentucky who works for an animal shelter, but it's not a no-kill shelter. She works like crazy to find homes for those dogs, even if it could only be a foster home, so they will be safe. She said there are so many dogs coming in that they can't handle them all, it breaks her heart. She lives on a farm and has 10 dogs and two cats that she took from the shelter or "found" her on their own....all animals that would have been killed because each one had some type of defect, many of them were abused. One is missing a leg, one is missing an eye and was found with no hair. My sister-in-law said the dog stayed under her bed for almost a year (only coming out to eat and go outside) until it finally trusted them enough to hold her. I can't imagine the abuse that dog suffered before she found it.
I will have pictures up along with her new name on Friday. We are very excited, bittersweet of course, but glad that Isabel's spirit will glow through our home with the joy that Ellie exudes.
Yay, Shtuey! I'm so happy for you and your family, especially the newest member. Obviously, she will be loved as fully as Isabel will be remembered.
Your post was so amazing, especially the part about what you did to help the dog shelter in Isabel's name that I couldn't help but put up my own post regarding our pets.
I'm so glad you found another dog to give your love to, it's obvious you have so much to give.
