It's the same in any lingo

How can one be compelled to accept slavery? I simply refuse to do the master's bidding. He may torture me, break my bones to atoms and even kill me. He will then have my dead body, not my obedience. Ultimately, therefore, it is I who am the victor and not he, for he has failed in getting me to do what he wanted done. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? If not now, when? ~ Rav Hillel, Pirke Avot

Friday Night Antidote

The constant barage of bullshit can really bring you down. But I've found the cure. I don't know why I hadn't thought of this sooner. It's Ella Fitzgerald; the greatest jazz vocalist that has ever lived. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar or a fool. Forget Sinatra. Once you hear Ella sing Devil Moon it's over. You can make arguments for Billie, and she is my number two, but Ella is honey, wine, a summer breeze, and pure perfection that wipes it all away. I have been listening to nothing else for three days now and my stress level has dropped like a stone. Her voice is penetrating, soothing, perfect. So get a glass of something, kick off your shoes, dance, settle back, and relax.

And tomorrow, go out and buy some Ella. I highly recommend the boxed set of her recordings with Decca Records, everything she did with Louis Armstrong, the Duke Ellington Songbook, and any live recordings you can get your hands on. Ella & Duke at Cote d'Azur is so choice. You can get the collection of the complete recordings of those shows for $80 on iTunes (I know that's a lot of money for most of us these days; trust me if I had it laying around I'd buy that bear right now. The Decca set is a good beginning though. For those of you who are only podcasting these days there is an Ella podcast. And now, the First Lady of Song:

If you don't feel better there is no hope for you.

Sorry lililam, I know you have trouble with the videos.

Oh, Shtuey! I love you! I was just going to say "I can't pull up those utubes up here on the mountain", but you said it for me. I agree with your assertion re: Ella- she is wonderful. My late husband and I took a trip to be with friends one New Years, just to witness them falling flat on their faces, drunk. We took the cue to go off on oor own, and had a lovely brunch by the seaside, then did some shopping and came up with an Ella and Louis CD, with her wearing a beautiful flowery dress nect to Louis and his horn. What a wonderfully mellifluent sound. When I was a music major back in the day, I would hole myself up in the library and listen to Ella and Billie and other divas on tape. A good choice. Ella was a sophisticated and mature musician.

i grew up on ella.

mom was a singer, she cut a record but never pursued a recording contract. she opted for a traditional life. pre-cd's, cassettes, etc., we had a beautiful wood stereo unit which served as furniture as well as a vehicle for music. my mother absolutely worshiped ella. i can still hear, " a tisket, a tasket, i lost my yellow basket"...was that the right color?

they don't make singers like this anymore and if they do, sadly, the pop and hip/hop/rap world have usurped true talent.
well, there are some wildly talented voices, but perhaps it is just the romantic aura we attribute to those days of yesteryear that make everything so much more appealing.

thanks, s.
